Regional Directors for Environmental Protection carry out tasks related to environmental protection policy in the field of nature protection management, investment process control and the transmission of information on the environment in the voivodeship and, within their competence, issue local legislation in the form of regulations. Regional directors for environmental protection are appointed and dismissed by the General Director for Environmental Protection.

The Regional Directorates for Environmental Protection were created, just like the General Directorate for Environmental Protection, under the Act of 3 October 2008 on the provision of information on the environment and its protection, public participation in environmental protection and on environmental impact assessment.

The main tasks of the Regional Directorates for Environmental Protection:

• issuing decisions and provisions stemming from the Act on environmental protection
• creating and removing forms of nature protection
• the transmission of data on the assessment of environmental impact of projects carried out by the General Directorate for Environmental Protection
• participation in strategic environmental impact assessments
• management of Natura 2000 and other forms of nature protection
• carrying out environmental impact assessment of projects or taking part in them
• implementing tasks related to the participation in eco-management and audit scheme (EMAS)
• conducting proceedings and performing other tasks arising from the Act on the prevention of environmental damage and its repair
• cooperation with self-governments in matters of environmental impact assessments and environmental protection
• cooperation with ecological organisations.
